On 25th January, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) along with the NaturalisT Foundation organized a massive beach cleaning drive seamlessly combined with an educational shore walk.
Around 100 enthusiastic students and their teachers from various local schools came together, turning an ordinary morning into an extraordinary experience. For anyone interested in Exploring Marine Life at Juhu Koliwada, this event proved that our coastlines are teeming with hidden ecological wonders waiting to be understood and protected.
Making a Real Difference: The Beach Clean-Up Drive
The day kickstarted with an intensive environmental clean-up activity. Equipped with gloves and collection bags, all of our young participants actively gathered discarded single-use plastics, microplastics, and abandoned fishing nets scattered heavily along the intertidal zone.
In just a few hours of teamwork, the group managed to collect an impressive 200–220 kg of plastic waste. It was a deeply powerful moment, visually demonstrating how collective civic efforts can create an immediate, significant impact on local habitats. For many of the attending students, this was their very first time participating in an active cleanliness drive, making the morning both eye-opening and highly inspiring.
Fascinating Intertidal Sightings: Exploring Marine Life at Juhu Koliwada
Once the shore was cleared of debris, our naturalists guided the students down to the rocky patches, exposed pools, and sandy tide flats. Shifting the focus toward Exploring Marine Life at Juhu Koliwada, participants were introduced to the surprisingly resilient world of macroinvertebrates living right under our noses in the city.
We carefully observed a diverse variety of unique marine species navigating the changing daily tides, including:
- Invertebrates: Asiatic Hard Clams anchoring tightly in the wet sand, highly camouflaged Porcelain Crabs scurrying sideways through rocky crevices, colorful Sea Sponges clinging to the undersides of stones, Horseshoe Limpets scraping algae, empty Bivalve shells of various shapes, and vibrant Sea Anemones swaying beautifully in the shallow water pools.
- Coastal Birds: Along with the aquatic creatures, we used binoculars to observe beautiful migratory birds feeding along the rich mudflats, such as the Lesser Sand Plover, the Greater Sand Plover, and the elegant, sharp-eyed Gull-billed Tern hunting small fish near the surf.
This hands-on, tactile experience helped students deeply grasp that even heavily urbanized city beaches like Juhu serve as critical homes to rich, thriving marine biodiversity that must be preserved.
Practical Learning Beyond the Traditional Classroom
The unique experience completely bypassed traditional textbooks and school walls. It allowed the children to see, feel, and truly understand the delicate biological mechanics of coastal ecosystems alongside the direct, devastating impact of urban pollution on them. By connecting the dots between land-based trash and marine health, the walk sparked immense curiosity, environmental awareness, and a lifelong sense of ecological responsibility in the next generation.
A Crucial Step Towards a Cleaner Mumbai Coastline
This joint initiative focused on Exploring Marine Life at Juhu Koliwada was about much more than just picking up trash for a single morning; it was about fostering long-term awareness.
Small, localized conservation efforts like these can easily snowball into massive policy changes and cleaner oceans when executed consistently across communities. Protecting our shared marine spaces is not just the lonely responsibility of a few non-profits, but a collective duty for everyone who lives in and enjoys the beautiful coastal city of Mumbai.
A Meaningful Day at Juhu Beach
The day ended with a sense of accomplishment and learning.
Participants left not only with the satisfaction of contributing to a cleaner environment but also with a deeper understanding of the marine life that exists along Mumbai’s coastline.
It was truly a wonderful and enriching experience for everyone involved.
