It started quietly. Just a group of people gathering, binoculars in hand, not entirely sure what the morning would bring. But within minutes, the space transformed. Sounds became signals. Movements turned into sightings.
And suddenly, NRI Colony didn’t feel like just another residential area. It felt alive.
NRI Colony in Navi Mumbai isn’t usually the first place people think of when it comes to birding spots. But that’s exactly what made this experience so special.
As we walked through the area, every tree seemed to hold a new surprise. Participants began spotting different species, calling others over, sharing quick glimpses before the birds flew off again.
The excitement built naturally. No rush, no pressure. Just observation and curiosity guiding the morning.
This birdwatching session was part of The Big Bird event, celebrating four years of NaturalisT Foundation.
While the event took place across multiple locations in Mumbai, NRI Colony had its own unique charm. It brought together people from different parts of the city, each with a shared interest but different levels of experience.
Some participants knew exactly what to look for. Others were seeing many of these birds for the very first time.
And somehow, that mix made the experience even better.
Across all locations, more than 80 bird species were recorded that day.
At NRI Colony, every new sighting added to the energy of the group. But what stood out wasn’t just the number. It was the reactions.
Someone spotting a bird for the first time and calling everyone over.
People quietly observing, trying not to disturb the moment.
Small groups forming, discussing what they just saw.
It didn’t feel like an event being conducted. It felt like something everyone was building together.
