When we think of exploring nature, we often imagine traveling far from the city. But sometimes, the most beautiful and enriching experiences lie hidden within our own surroundings.

On 3rd November, the Green City Trail by NaturalisT Foundation took place at Sion Fort, a true hidden gem in Mumbai. Located atop a hill within Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Garden in the busy suburb of Sion, this place often goes unnoticed by Mumbaikars despite its beauty and significance.
A Glimpse into History
Sion Fort holds deep historical importance. It was built during the rule of the East India Company between 1669 and 1677, standing tall on a conical hillock.
Over the years, it has witnessed the transformation of Mumbai, and in 1925, it was recognized as a Grade I Heritage structure. Exploring this hidden gem in Mumbai felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by stories from centuries ago.
A Trail Rich in Urban Biodiversity
The path leading up to the fort was full of life.
Participants observed a variety of plant species and fascinating insects, including:

Stink bugs, Katydids, Leaf hoppers, Wasps, Mites, Beautiful species of spiders
This rich biodiversity, found in a hidden gem in Mumbai like Sion Fort, is a reminder that nature continues to thrive even in urban spaces.
At the Top: A Moment of Reflection
Reaching the top, we were greeted with a scenic view of the city.
At the same time, we were overwhelmed by the history this place holds and surprised at how such a hidden gem in Mumbai often goes unnoticed. It became a moment of reflection—on how easily we overlook the treasures around us in our everyday lives.
A Spiritual Extension to the Journey
At the suggestion of Mr. Chand Shahpuri, the group extended the trail to visit Gurudwara Shri Dashmesh Darbar.

This added a peaceful and spiritual dimension to the day’s exploration, making the experience even more wholesome and memorable.
More Than Just a Nature Trail
This Green City Trail was unique, as it beautifully combined urban biodiversity, historical exploration, a touch of spiritual experience.
It showed us that adventure doesn’t always require long journeys. Sometimes, it lies hidden within our own city just like this hidden gem in Mumbai waiting to be discovered.
A Day of Discovery and Learning
This trail to Sion Fort was truly a day filled with discovery, learning, and joy.
In a fast-paced city like Mumbai, experiences like these remind us to pause, observe, and reconnect—with nature, history, and ourselves.
