On 3rd November 2019, NaturalisT Foundation organized a trek to Vikatgad, a 2100 ft. hill fort known for its scenic beauty and proximity to Matheran. This Vikatgad trek near Mumbai turned out to be a perfect blend of adventure, nature, and memorable moments.

The Beginning of an Exciting Day at Vikatgad

The day began with all participants gathering at Neral station, buzzing with excitement for the trek ahead. After a quick breakfast and a short introduction about the fort, we began our journey.

The trail started off gently, with a walk along the railway tracks under a lush green canopy. The surroundings were incredibly soothing—filled with butterflies, dragonflies, and damselflies fluttering around, making it a peaceful start to the Vikatgad trek.

From Easy Trails to Challenging Climbs

As the trek progressed, the terrain began to shift. The easy paths slowly gave way to larger rocks and steeper climbs.

Carefully navigating through the tricky sections, everyone made their way up with enthusiasm and teamwork. The climb was both challenging and exciting, making the Vikatgad trek a great option for those looking for a slightly adventurous trail near Mumbai.

The Reward at the Top of Peb Fort

Reaching the top of Vikatgad (Peb Fort) was truly rewarding.

We were welcomed by breathtaking views and a cool breeze that made the entire climb worth it. Sitting together, we enjoyed homemade theplas while soaking in the peaceful surroundings and scenic beauty of Raigad’s hills.

After a brief photo session filled with laughter and smiles, we prepared ourselves for the descent. 

A Trek for All Ages

One of the most inspiring parts of this trek was the diversity of participants.

The youngest trekker was just 8 years old, while the oldest was 63. Together, they proved that age is truly just a number when it comes to exploring nature and enjoying treks near Mumbai.

A Peaceful End to the Journey

On our way back, we visited a large Ganesha idol, adding a calm and spiritual touch to the day.

Once back at the base, cabs dropped everyone at Neral station. As participants bid farewell, they carried with them not just tired legs, but happy memories and a strong sense of accomplishment.

Treks like Vikatgad are not just about adventure—they offer a chance to reconnect with nature, especially for those living in fast-paced cities like Mumbai.

However, with increasing footfall, it becomes important to trek responsibly. Simple practices like carrying back waste and respecting local biodiversity can help preserve such beautiful trails.
