Umasa Warsi was born and raised right next to Juhu Beach — and for years, like the bustling crowds around her, she had no idea what lived beneath the surface. Then she looked. What she found was a whole new world, unexplored and undiscovered by the tourists walking past it every day: octopuses and sea snakes turning up even at Juhu.

A course in Biodiversity and Wildlife Biology deepened that spark, and today Umasa leads marine walks and manages social media for Naturalist Explorers, bringing the intertidal world to people who have walked past it their whole lives. She loves busting the assumption that aquatic snails are harmless, slow creatures — pointing out fierce predators like the assassin snail, and the fact that marine snail venom is among the most potent in the world.
Her field kit is refreshingly practical: a water bottle, a first-aid kit, and tweezers to inspect tiny creatures without ever touching them. Self-described as more suited to lab work, she heads to the field simply to touch some grass — and, she jokes, because the animals love her. Her field motto captures her whole approach: you don’t need a forest to experience nature, you can start by just taking a peek beneath your feet.
