Gandhi Tekdi SGNP offers an incredible nature trail experience for students and nature enthusiasts looking to discover Mumbai’s rich biodiversity.
On a bright Monday morning, the 2nd of September 2019, a group of 50 excited students from Sacred Heart Church, Khar (West), set out for a day that promised both adventure and hands-on environmental learning. Their destination was Gandhi Tekdi, a serene viewpoint nestled deep within the lush expanse of Sanjay Gandhi National Park—a unique sanctuary where nature thrives just a short distance away from the city’s bustling urban sprawl.
Led by experienced naturalists Sachin Rane, Masira Shaikh, and Tatiana Mendes, the trail began with a brief introductory session that immediately sparked curiosity among the young participants.
The weather was remarkably favorable for an outdoor trek, as a welcome break in the monsoon season brought clear blue skies and warm sunshine, creating ideal conditions for spotting local wildlife in their natural habitat.
Exploring Biodiversity on the Gandhi Tekdi SGNP Trail
As the group made their way along the winding forest trail towards Gandhi Tekdi SGNP, they were greeted by a vibrant display of life at every turn. Butterflies of various species were fluttering gracefully across the path during what was peak breeding season. The students watched in fascination as these delicate insects laid eggs on host plants, while tiny caterpillars made their steady way across vibrant green leaves.
The forest canopy was equally alive with biological activity throughout the morning trek. Birds filled the fresh morning air with distinct territorial calls, while energetic palm squirrels darted playfully between the tall tree branches above.
Along the trail, the students also discovered the rich plant life that supports this fragile ecosystem:
- Monsoon Flora & Pollinators: Wild monsoon flowers attracted buzzing bees, solitary wasps, and nectar-seeking insects.
- Native Trees: Tall timber trees and lush canopy foliage provided much-needed shade along the trek.

After an enriching walk through the forest path, the group reached the top of Gandhi Tekdi SGNP. Located on a prominent hill within Sanjay Gandhi National Park, Gandhi Tekdi features a peaceful memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. The viewpoint offers visitors a sweeping panoramic perspective of the vast green forest canopy contrasting sharply against the distant Mumbai skyline.
Sitting together under the cool shade while taking in the stunning view, the students took a well-deserved moment to pause and reflect on their journey. A quiet reflection session helped them absorb the calmness of the forest environment, followed by an interactive discussion led by the guides on the critical importance of national parks, biodiversity conservation, and urban wildlife preservation.
