Hanging Gardens Nature Trail offers a refreshing opportunity for city dwellers to discover the unexpected biodiversity thriving right in the heart of Mumbai. When we think of a typical Sunday morning in the city, we often imagine a slow start at home or a quick routine outing. But sometimes, stepping outdoors reveals experiences that are both deeply peaceful and educational.
On 13th October 2019, NaturalisT Foundation conducted a guided nature walk at Kamla Nehru Park, fondly known as the iconic Hanging Gardens. The park is home to a surprising variety of plant and animal species, making it an ideal destination for an urban biodiversity walk.

Exploring Wildlife on the Hanging Gardens Nature Trail
We began the morning with a short, insightful introduction led by Tatiana Mendes, setting an engaging tone for what turned out to be a memorable journey. Almost immediately, the park came alive with energetic bird activity. Participants on the Hanging Gardens Nature Trail were thrilled to spot the vibrant Indian Pitta, a rare and colorful highlight for any wildlife enthusiast.
Alongside this beautiful visitor, we observed active flocks of Black Drongo, heard the rhythmic calls of the Coppersmith Barbet echoed through the forest canopy, and admired the striking presence of the Alexandrine Parakeet. One of the most entertaining moments occurred when an Indian Grey Hornbill was hilariously chased by a group of Rose-ringed Parakeets across the treetops, bringing smiles to everyone present.
Butterfly Discoveries on the Hanging Gardens Nature Trail
The insect and butterfly activity during our Hanging Gardens Nature Trail exploration was equally impressive. We spotted nearly a dozen distinct butterfly species fluttering gracefully across the landscaped flowerbeds. A major highlight was witnessing intense territorial display battles between male Danaid Eggfly butterflies defending their patches.
We also observed several large Common Mime butterflies along with their caterpillars feeding on host foliage. Adding to the charm were delicate lily moth caterpillars hidden quietly among the tall garden grasses, showcasing the tiny natural wonders that often go unnoticed during a routine park visit. Environmental Learning along the Hanging Gardens Nature Trail
As the Hanging Gardens Nature Trail progressed, our focus naturally shifted from simply spotting species to understanding how these living organisms interact. We explored the ecological importance of various tree species within the gardens, discussing their roles in supporting local urban fauna, their cultural significance, and how deeply connected they are to our daily environmental health.
What began as a standard guided walk transformed into a vibrant group discussion, with participants actively sharing thoughts, asking thoughtful questions, and building a deeper personal connection with nature. You can learn more about city conservation efforts through the official Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Environment Department.
Reflections on the Hanging Gardens Nature Trail Experience
As the morning gradually turned into afternoon, everyone carried back much more than just a checklist of observed species.

Participating in the Hanging Gardens Nature Trail served as a gentle reminder of the rich biodiversity that exists within Mumbai, often overlooked in the rush of daily life. It provided a dedicated moment to pause, observe, and truly appreciate the green urban spaces that nourish our city.
It was truly an eco-enriched Sunday morning for everyone who joined us. Experiences like this demonstrate that we do not always need to travel far away into remote forests to reconnect with the natural world—sometimes, all it takes is stepping into a local garden with fresh eyes to discover an entirely new perspective on urban wildlife.
